The slugging of Dick Allen, who drove in seven runs, paced the Cardinals to a 12-1 victory over the Giants behind the four-hit pitching of Steve Carlton. Allen drove in a run with a single in the first inning, homered with a man on base in the fifth and capped his night's work with a grand slam in the eighth. Carlton, who joined in the Cards' attack with three singles, lost his bid for a shutout when Willie McCovey homered in the sixth.
