Mickey Stanley singled in the 11th inning, stole second and scored on a single by Willie Horton to give the Tigers a 5-4 victory over the Angels. The Tigers were held to two hits by Andy Messersmith in the first eight innings and were losing, 3-0, going into the ninth when they exploded for four runs.

With one out, Gates Brown delivered a pinch-homer and Al Kaline singled. Paul Doyle relieved and yielded a pinch-single by Stanley. Ken Tatum took over and got Horton to ground into a forceout, but Jim Northrup followed with a two-run homer to send the Tigers ahead.
