The Yankees, who were held hitless by Jim Rooker in the first eight innings, pushed across a run in the ninth to tie the score at 1-1 and then beat the Royals in the 12th, 2-1, on a sacrifice fly by Horace Clarke with the bases loaded. The Royals scored an unearned run in the first inning.

Rooker turned back the Yankees until his no-hit bid was broken when Clarke singled in the ninth. Bobby Murcer, after failing twice in bunt attempts, doubled to drive in Clarke. In the 12th, Ron Woods singled and was forced by John Ellis. A single by Gene Michael and a walk to Pete Ward loaded the bases before Moe Drabowsky relieved Rooker.
