. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The battery of Jim Merritt and Johnny Bench proved a winning combination as the Reds defeated the Mets, 5-1. Merritt, in gaining his 11th victory, doled out six hits and did not issue a pass for eighth time in 14 starts. Hal McRae started the Reds' scoring with a homer in the second inning before Bench swung into action. The star catcher homered in the fourth, batted in two runs with a double in the eighth and scored the final tally on a single by Jimmy Stewart. Merritt was deprived of a shutout when Cleon Jones tripled and Donn Clendenon singled in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
