A grand-slam homer by Rico Petrocelli gave the Red Sox a 5-2 victory to complete the sweep of a doubleheader with the Royals. The Red Sox won the first game, 7-4. Homers by Pat Kelly and Jackie Hernandez, each with a man on base, accounted for the Royals' runs in the lidlifter. The Red Sox broke the 4-4 tie with two unearned runs in the sixth inning on a pass to Dick Schofield, double error by Tom Burgmeier on a bunt by Mike Andrews, sacrifice fly by Reggie Smith and single by Tony Conigliaro, who drove in his third run of the game. Ken Brett homered for the final run in the eighth.

In the nightcap, a single by Andrews and passes to Carl Yastrzemski and Conigliaro loaded the bases for Petrocelli's slam. [The Sporting News]
