The Twins broke a tie with three runs in the 11th inning and then stood off a rally of the Senators to gain a 10-9 victory. Rich Reese, appearing as a pinch-hitter, delivered a grand-slam homer in the sixth inning to put the Twins ahead, 7-3, but the Senators came back with two runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to force the game into overtime.

In the 11th, consecutive singles by Leo Cardenas, Harmon Killebrew and Tony Oliva snapped the deadlock. Then, after Charlie Manuel singled to load the bases, Jim Holt knocked in two runs with a single, enabling the Twins to survive a two-run double by Frank Howard in the Senators' half.
