On the verge of losing to the Padres for the third straight time, the Cardinals rallied for seven runs in the seventh inning and pulled out the final game of the series, 10-7. The Padres built up a 7-1 lead against Bob Gibson before Ted Simmons started the Cardinals' comeback by hitting his first major league homer with a man on base in the sixth.

Vic Davalillo, batting for Gibson, opened the seventh with a single and then singled again on his second trip to drive in the Cards' final run of the rally. Lou Brock also had two of the Redbirds' eight hits during the stanza. Joe Torre and pinch-hitter Leron Lee each drove in two runs with doubles. [The Sporting News]
