Paul Popovich, subbing for Don Kessinger, who was away on military duty, led off the game with a homer to spark a four-run outburst as the Cubs defeated the Expos, 7-3. After Popovich's poke, the Cubs loaded the bases on a pass to Glenn Beckert, a double by Billy Williams and an intentional walk to Johnny Callison. Ron Santo seized the opportunity and drove in two runs with a single. A walk to Jack Hiatt reloaded the bases and the fourth run of inning counted on a grounder by Cleo James.
