Steve Blass, who had lost seven straight decisions, pitched himself back into the Pirates' winning column by defeating the Giants, 5-1, with a five-hitter. Blass also batted in the Pirates' first run off Juan Marichal with a double in the third inning. Willie Stargell homered after a single by Roberto Clemente in the fourth and Jerry May batted in the Bucs' last two tallies with a bases-loaded single in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
