The Cubs drew 11 walks to go with nine hits and had an easy time beating the Padres, 7-1. Mike Corkins passed Johnny Caillison with the bases loaded in the first inning to force in the Cubs' initial run. Bill Hands gave up a tally on singles by Dave Campbell, Steve Huntz and Nate Colbert in the Padres' half, but then allowed only three more hits the rest of the way.

The Cubs broke away with two runs in the second on a single by Cleo James, a sacrifice, a single by Glenn Beckert and a double by Billy Williams. Jim Hickman hit the 100th homer of his major league career with a man on base in the sixth. [The Sporting News]
