The Expos pounded Jim Merritt for five runs in the first inning, three scoring on a homer by John Bateman, and beat the Reds, 8-4. Doubles by Don Hahn and Rusty Staub and singles by Adolfo Phillips and Coco Laboy produced two runs in the Expos' fast getaway before Bateman connected for the circuit. The Expos added another pair off Merritt in the sixth when John Boccabella was safe on an error and Bob Bailey followed with a pinch-homer.
