Crushing the Brewers' attempt to play the percentages, Jim Northrup smashed a grand-slam homer with two out in the eighth inning to power the Tigers to a 6-2 victory. Elliott Maddox walked with one away, Al Kaline singled and Norm Cash drew a pass to load the bases.

The Brewers removed Gene Brabender and brought in righthander Dave Baldwin, who struck out Willie Horton. Lefthander John O'Donoghue then replaced Baldwin and ran the count on Northrup to three balls and one strike before the lefthanded batter hit the eighth grand slam of his major league career.
