The Cardinals' inability to score a runner from third base with nobody out resulted in a 6-5 loss to the Giants. After the Giants built up a 5-2 lead in the first two innings, Joe Torre homered for the Cardinals in the fifth. The Giants picked up what proved to be the deciding run in their half on a sacrifice fly by Hal Lanier with the bases loaded.

Torre singled in the eighth and scored on a triple by Joe Hague. Don McMahon, the winner in relief, then stranded Hague at third by retiring Ted Simmons on a liner to Tito Fuentes, Julian Javier on a pop-up and pinch-hitter Vic Davalillo on a grounder. [The Sporting News]
