Catcher Ted Simmons' pickoff of Jose Arcia, when the pinch-runner strayed off second base, proved the key play as the Cardinals defeated the Padres. 5-4. With the Cardinals leading 5-3, Chris Cannizzaro singled in the eighth inning and gave way on the paths to Arcia, who stopped at second on a single by Al Ferrara.

After Simmons nailed Arcia, the Padres were able to score only one run, instead of two, when Ramon Webster singled and Ron Slocum doubled. Joe Torre hit a homer in the eighth to provide the Cardinals' winning run. [The Sporting News]
