Mike Andrews hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career to carry the Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Royals. The Red Sox also had a homer by Rico Petrocelli, accounting for their first two runs of the game.

With the score tied, 2-2, the Royals lifted Bill Butler after George Scott walked to open the ninth inning. Bob Johnson relieved and walked Billy Conigliaro. Following a sacrifice, Dick Schofield was passed intentionally to load the bases, setting the stage for Andrews' smash. The Red Sox added another run before the inning ended on a double by Carl Yastrzemski and a single by Reggie Smith. The Royals' three-run rally in their half of the ninth served only to tighten the score. [The Sporting News]
