With the score tied, 2-2, the Royals lifted Bill Butler after George Scott walked to open the ninth inning. Bob Johnson relieved and walked Billy Conigliaro. Following a sacrifice, Dick Schofield was passed intentionally to load the bases, setting the stage for Andrews' smash. The Red Sox added another run before the inning ended on a double by Carl Yastrzemski and a single by Reggie Smith.
