The battery of Gaylord Perry and Dick Dietz proved a winning combination as the Giants defeated the Cubs, 3-2. Perry pitched a three-hitter and Dietz batted in the Giants' runs with a homer in the second inning. The catcher's blow off Bill Hands came after Willie McCovey walked and Ken Henderson was safe on an error by shortstop Roger Metzger, playing his first major league game.
