The superb relief pitching of Dave Roberts featured the Padres' 4-0 victory over the Cardinals. Mike Corkins, who started for the Padres, pulled a groin muscle and left the game after one inning. Roberts pitched the rest of the way and handcuffed the Cardinals on six hits.

The Padres exploded for their runs off Steve Carlton in the seventh. Ivan Murrell snapped the scoreless duel with a homer and, after a single by Tommy Dean and two walks loaded the bases, Cito Gaston slammed a three-run double. [The Sporting News]
