The Pirates cashed in on two triples by Dave Cash, who hit his second three-bagger with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, to defeat the Expos, 8-4. The Pirates ended a string of 21 scoreless stanzas by counting four times in the third with the aid of Cash's first triple and another by Manny Sanguillen.

The Expos scored three runs in the fourth to chase Bob Moose and tied the score in the fifth on a triple by Mack Jones and an infield out by Jim Gosger. Singles by Bill Mazeroski and Matty Alou, around a pass to Freddie Patek, filled the bases in the sixth for Cash's tie-breaker. Cash then scored himself on a single by Bob Robertson.
