A single by Jerry May capped a three-run rally in the fifth inning and supplied the Pirates' winning margin in a 4-2 victory over the Expos. Matty Alou, who tripled to drive in the Pirates' initial run in the second, opened the fifth with a single. Richie Hebner walked. After failing to bunt, Dave Cash singled, scoring Alou. Hebner raced to third and Cash took second on the throw. An intentional pass to Bob Robertson brought up May, who singled to drive in two runs.

Rusty Staub homered for the Expos in the first and their other run counted in the second on a single by Jim Gosger and a double by Bobby Wine. [The Sporting News]
