. . . where the 1970s live forever!
Cesar Gutierrez became the first player in modern major league history to collect seven straight hits in one game as the Tigers defeated the Indians in 12 innings, 9-8, to sweep a doubleheader. Mickey Stanley decided the game with a homer. In the opener, Elliott Maddox, Dick McAuliffe and Stanley each batted in two runs as the Tigers snapped the Indians' seven-game winning streak, 7-2. Norm Cash contributed a homer. Jack Heidemann accounted for the Indians' two runs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth innning.

In the nightcap, Gutierrez singled in the first, third and fifth innings, doubled in the seventh and singled in the eighth, 10th and 12th. Tony Horton hit a grand-slam homer for the Indians in the first and collected a fifth RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Chuck Hinton and Ted Uhlaender also homered for the Indians, while the Tigers had two homers by Dick McAuliffe and one by Al Kaline, each coming with a man on base, in addition to Stanley's winning wallop. The Tigers tied the score at 8-8 in the eighth when Gates Brown doubled and Gutierrez singled. [The Sporting News]
