The slugging of Johnny Bench, who drove in four runs with four hits, including a homer, led the Reds to a 9-3 victory in a split of a doubleheader with the Dodgers, who won the first game by the same 9-3 score. Don Sutton, who pitched the opener for the Dodgers, became the first visiting hurler to turn in a complete-game victory at Crosley Field since September 10, 1969, when Clay Kirby of the Padres turned the trick. Jim Lefebvre led the Dodgers' attack with three hits, driving in three runs. Wes Parker, who also had three hits, accounted for two RBIs.

Wayne Simpson gained his 10th victory of the season in the nightcap. Bench's homer with a man on base in the eighth inning was his 24th, tying teammate Tony Perez for the major league lead. Pete Rose and Hal McRae also rapped round-trippers in the Reds' 15-hit attack. [The Sporting News]
