. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Steve Carlton and Bob Gibson pitched the Cardinals to a sweep of a doubleheader with the Cubs, 3-0 and 3-2. Carlton was the winner in his encounter with Ken Holtzman, who was stopped on a personal five-game winning streak. Holtzman helped beat himself with a wild pitch that set up the Cardinals' first run in the second inning and a balk with the bases loaded that allowed another run to cross the plate in the sixth.

Gibson fell behind in the second game, 2-0, but a double by Jose Cardenal and a single by Dick Allen produced a run for the Cardinals in the sixth and Gibson tied the score with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Joe Torre then smashed a homer off reliever Phil Regan for the winning run in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
