Two rookies, Jerry Reuss of the Cardinals and Jim Nelson of the Pirates, starred on the mound in a split of a doubleheader, with the Cardinals winning the first game. 6-1, and the Pirates taking the second game, 1-0, in 10 innings. Reuss pitched a six-hitter and breezed to victory after the Cardinals exploded for five runs off Dock Ellis in the second inning.

Nelson also pitched a six-hitter in the nightcap. After Mike Torrez worked nine innings for the Cardinals before going out for a pinch-hitter, Frank Linzy relieved in the tenth and was the loser on a single by Gene Alley, sacrifice by Freddie Patek and single by Matty Alou. [The Sporting News]
