Reggie Jackson misjudged a line drive by Lou Piniella with the bases loaded in the first inning and the ball got past the center fielder for a triple to start the Royals off to a 7-5 victory over the Athletics. Piniella, after reaching third, scored on a wild pitch.

Cookie Rojas homered for the Royals in the second and their winning runs followed in the fifth when Joe Keough singled with the bases loaded. Joe Rudi and Jackson hit homers for the A's, Rudi's blow coming with a mate aboard. [The Sporting News]
