The Pirates erupted for five runs in the first inning and defeated the Cardinals, 7-2. Matty Alou opened with a single and Richie Hebner was safe on a fumble by Julian Javier, ending the Cardinals' string of 87 innings without an error. Roberto Clemente and Al Oliver followed with run-scoring singles, Bob Robertson tripled for two more and then beat the throw to the plate on Dave Cash's grounder to Dal Maxvill.
