Jim Wynn, who had accounted for only three runs batted in previously during the month of June, smashed a homer with two men on base in the first inning to start the Astros off to a 5-4 victory over the Padres.

The Astros added their two other tallies in the third after Denis Menke and Bob Watson singled and Doug Rader walked to load the bases. Johnny Edwards singled, driving in Menke, but Watson tried to score from second and was thrown out. Rader took third on the play and counted what proved to be the winning run on a squeeze bunt by Denny Lemaster.
