The Angels turned in the A. L.'s first triple play of the season to mark a 5-4 victory over the Royals. With the Royals leading, 2-1, Paul Schaal singled in the fifth inning and stopped at second on a single by Cookie Rojas. Amos Otis grounded down the line to Chico Ruiz, who stepped on third base to start the triple killing via Sandy Alomar at second base and Billy Cowan at first.

Having stopped the Royals' threat, the Angels erupted for four runs in the sixth, two scoring on a homer by Joe Azcue. Alomar stretched his hitting streak to 21 games by knocking in a run with a single and Jim Fregosi beat out an infield hit to drive in what proved to be the winning run.
