With Commissioner Kuhn and N. L. President Feeney on hand, a crowd of 51,050 turned out for the opening of Cincinnati's new Riverfront Stadium, but the Braves spoiled the occasion by defeating the Reds, 8-2. Hank Aaron had the honor of hitting the first homer in the new park, connecting for the circuit with a man on base in the first inning. Orlando Cepeda and Tony Gonzalez followed with doubles for another run. The Braves added three more in the third when Felix Millan singled, Aaron walked and Rico Carty homered. Aaron and Carty doubled and Cepeda singled to wind up the Braves' scoring in the ninth. The Reds picked up their runs in the fourth on singles by Tommy Helms, Woody Woodward, Angel Bravo and Pete Rose. [The Sporting News] |
