. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Pinch-hitter Jose Cardenal, who beat the Cubs with a two-run single in the previous night's game, turned the trick again with a homer in the eighth inning to give the Cardinals a 5-4 victory. The defeat was the 12th in a row for the Cubs, who failed to hold a 4-1 lead. Billy Williams accounted for three RBIs with the homer.

Bob Gibson, who gained his ninth straight victory, hit a homer in the third inning. After the Cardinals picked up another run in the fourth, a double by Julian Javier and a single by Gibson tied the score in seventh. [The Sporting News]
