With two out in the third inning, Les Cain hit the first homer of his major league career and the Tigers followed with two more round-trippers in the same stanza to defeat the Yankees, 5-3. After Cain connected, Mickey Stanley also hit for the circuit. Dick McAuliffe singled and Al Kaline clouted the Tigers' third homer.

Another run was added when Willie Horton reached second on an error by Gene Michael and Jim Northrup singled. Ron Woods had a homer for the Yankees. Cain gained his sixth straight victory with the assistance of Tom Timmerman, who relieved in the eighth. The Tigers turned in five double plays to stifle the Yankees. [The Sporting News]
