The Cubs snapped their 12-game losing streak behind the pitching of Fergie Jenkins, who yielded only four hits and beat the Cardinals, 5-0. Jerry Reuss kept pace with Jenkins until the seventh inning when the Cubs erupted for four runs.

Jack Hiatt walked and when Jenkins bunted, both runners were safe on a fielder's choice. Following a sacrifice by Don Kessinger, Paul Popovich grounded to Julian Javier, who threw wildly to the plate as two runs scored. Billy Williams singled to drive in Popovich.
