. . . where the 1970s live forever!
A crowd of 53,863 turned out to see Denny McLain make his first start since coming off the suspended list, but the ace righthander was knocked out in the sixth inning, although the Tigers eventually defeated the Yankees in the 11th, 6-5. McLain yielded eight hits, including homers by Jerry Kenney, Thurman Munson and Bobby Murcer. The blow by Murcer broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth and the Yankees then added another run when Danny Cater doubled and Curt Blefary singled to chase McLain.

The Tigers took McLain off the hook with two tallies in the seventh on singles by Russ Nagelson and Dick McAuliffe, a grounder by Mickey Stanley and a sacrifice fly by Al Kaline. In the 11th, Don Wert struck out but reached first on a passed ball. Ken Szkotkiewicz was safe on Horace Clarke's third error of the game. Ike Brown sacrificed and, after McAuliffe grounded out, Stanley singled to drive in the winning run. [The Sporting News]
