Rollie Fingers, Paul Lindblad and Mudcat Grant combined to pitch the Athletics to a 3-0 victory over the White Sox. Fingers, who allowed three hits, weakened in the 94-degree heat and was lifted with one out in the seventh inning. Lindblad retired five straight men before being lifted for a pinch-batter. Grant gave up one hit in the ninth.

The A's scored one run in the sixth on singles by Felipe Alou and Sal Bando around an infield out. Bert Campaneris provided the clincher in the ninth, hitting a homer after Frank Fernandez singled as a pinch-hitter for Lindblad. [The Sporting News]
