The Astros absorbed a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Gary Nolan in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader before coming back to beat the Reds in second game, 10-4. Nolan pitched a five-hitter. The Reds scored two of their runs in the third inning on a pass to Pete Rose, single by Bobby Tolan, a wild pitch and a triple by Tony Perez. The other run in the seventh counted on a grounder by Lee May with the bases loaded.

The Astros, who were trailing, 3-2, broke ahead in the nightcap with four runs in the sixth inning. After a single by Denis Menke and double by Bob Watson kayoed Tony Cloninger, Clay Carroll relieved. Doug Rader was safe on an error, allowing one run to score.
