Ted Abernathy, obtained from the Cardinals, won the opener in relief and saved the nightcap as the Royals swept a twi-night doubleheader with the Brewers, 5-3 and 4-3. In the first game, the Royals tied the score with two runs on just one hit in the ninth inning and added the winning pair without the benefit of a hit in the tenth. A hit batsman, two walks, a grounder and a single by Tom Matchick produced runs in the ninth. Pat Kelly walked in the tenth, took second on a sacrifice and moved to third when Amos Otis was safe on an error. After Otis stole second, Ed Kirkpatrick was passed intentionally. Lou Piniella then bunted. Catcher Jerry McNertney grabbed the ball and stepped on the plate for a forceout, but his throw to first in an attempt to complete the double play hit Piniella in the back and bounced away as Otis and Kirkpatrick scored.
