Roberto Clemente and Gene Alley smashed two homers apiece, while Al Oliver and Bill Mazeroski each added one as the Pirates outslugged the Cubs, 16-14. The Cubs had a grand-slam homer by Billy Williams and a solo swat by Willie Smith. Clemente's clouts accounted for four of the Pirates' seven runs in the first two innings, but the Cubs tied the score with the aid of Williams' wallop in their half of the second.

After the Cubs batted their way to a 13-10 lead, the Pirates rallied for the knotting trio in the eighth on successive homers by Alley and Mazeroski, a pass to Johnny Jeter, a stolen base and a single by Matty Alou. In the ninth, after Clemente and Willie Stargell reached base, Manny Sanguillen hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Clemente, and Alley followed with his second homer of the game as the decisive blow, enabling the Pirates to brush off a run by the Cubs in their half of the final frame.
