Wayne Simpson, the Reds' sure-shot candidate for Rookie of the Year honors, pitched a four-hitter and beat the Astros, 3-1, for his 10th straight victory and 13th in 14 decisions. The Reds bunched four of their nine hits to score all their runs off Denny Lemaster in the sixth inning.

Bobby Tolan led off with a single and counted on a double by Johnny Bench. Lee May singled Bench home and, after an infield out, crossed the plate on a single by Tommy Helms. Simpson lost his bid for a shutout when the Astros scored in the ninth on a double by Joe Morgan and single by Bob Watson. [The Sporting News]
