Although Johnny Briggs batted in four runs with two homers and Deron Johnson also hit for the circuit, the Phillies lost to the Pirates, 7-5. The Pirates jumped on Jim Bunning for three runs in the first inning on singles by Matty Alou and Richie Hebner, a double by Roberto Clemente, an infield out and a triple by Manny Sanguillen.

Alou singled and Hebner homered for two more runs in the second. The Pirates added what proved to be the winning tally in the sixth when Sanguillen and Gene Alley singled and Bill Mazeroski delivered a sacrifice fly. [The Sporting News]
