Jim Merritt turned in the 24th complete game to the credit of the Reds' pitchers, one more than the staff total in 1969, and shut out the Padres, 5-0. The route-going performance was the eighth of the season for the lefthander. The Reds, who had only one homer in seven previous games in their new Riverfront Stadium, finally broke loose with round-trippers by Pete Rose, Tony Perez and Johnny Bench. [The Sporting News]
