Reggie Smith homered to a spark three-run outburst by the Red Sox in the first inning of the lidlifter. Rico Petrocelli hit for the circuit with a man on base in the third. The Red Sox added their other runs in the ninth, two counting on a single by Smith. Jim Northrup belted two homers for the Tigers.
