A tenth-inning homer by Elliott Maddox, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter and stayed in the lineup to star at bat, gave the Tigers a 4-3 victory for a split of a twi-night doubleheader with the Red Sox, who won the first game, 8-4. Reggie Smith homered to a spark three-run outburst by the Red Sox in the first inning of the lidlifter. Rico Petrocelli hit for the circuit with a man on base in the third. The Red Sox added their other runs in the ninth, two counting on a single by Smith. Jim Northrup belted two homers for the Tigers.

In the nightcap, Mike Andrews and Smith homered in the third inning for the Red Sox, but the Tigers tied the score in the sixth when Maddox drew a walk as a pinch-hitter and Ike Brown and Don Wert doubled. The Red Sox regained the lead with three singles in the eighth, but back-to-back doubles by Jim Price and Maddox provided the tying tally in the Tigers' half. [The Sporting News]
