Ted Abernathy gained his third straight victory in relief with the Royals since coming from the Cardinals when pinch-hitter Billy Sorrell broke a tie with a run-scoring single in the eighth inning to beat the Angels, 4-3. Clyde Wright, making his first appearance since his no-hitter against the Athletics July 3, was lifted in the seventh when the Royals went ahead, 3-2, on a double by Amos Otis and single by Lou Piniella.
