Ted Abernathy gained his third straight victory in relief with the Royals since coming from the Cardinals when pinch-hitter Billy Sorrell broke a tie with a run-scoring single in the eighth inning to beat the Angels, 4-3. Clyde Wright, making his first appearance since his no-hitter against the Athletics July 3, was lifted in the seventh when the Royals went ahead, 3-2, on a double by Amos Otis and single by Lou Piniella.

The Angels pulled even against Abernathy in their half without getting the ball out of the infield on a walk, two safe bunts and an infield hit by Roger Repoz. In the eighth, Paul Schaal singled with one out and was on second with two away when Sorrell came through with the deciding single. [The Sporting News]
