After five consecutive losses, Mickey Lolich gained his first victory since May 29 when the Tigers beat the Red Sox, 3-2. Willie Horton and Ken Szotkiewicz homered to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead, but the Red Sox tied the score in the ninth when Rico Petrocelli doubled and Billy Conigliaro singled.

In the Tigers' half, Norm Cash and Don Wert walked and, after a wild pitch, Dalton Jones drew an intentional pass to load the bases. Gates Brown then batted for Szotkiewicz and hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Elliott Maddox. [The Sporting News]
