Al Downing beat himself in a duel with Tommy John by committing an error that allowed the White Sox to score two unearned runs in the eighth inning for a 2-1 victory over the Brewers. Bobby Knoop led off the stanza with a single and John sacrificed. When Tommy McCraw grounded to Tito Francona, Downing covered first but failed to handle the throw, Knoop scoring on the error. After Luis Aparicio was retired, Carlos May singled to score McCraw. The Brewers' run in the home half of the eighth also was unearned.
