The Orioles hit four homers to three for Yankees, but needed a two-run single by Don Buford with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning to emerge with a 9-8 victory. Frank Robinson rapped two homers and Buford got one, each with the bases empty, while Boog Powell connected a with man on base for the Orioles. The Yankees had a three-run homer by Thurman Munson, a two-run belt by Curt Blefary and a solo swat by John Ellis.

The Orioles were trailing, 8-6, going into the final half of the ninth and cut their deficit to one run when Robinson hit his second homer of the game. Singles by Brooks Robinson and Davey Johnson, together with a pass to Andy Etchebarren, loaded the bases with none out. Lindy McDaniel, on the mound for the Yankees, struck out pinch-hitters Terry Crowley and Elrod Hendricks, but Buford, after missing on two pitches, connected for his game-winning single.
