An injury that forced Jim McGlothlin to leave the game proved a break for the Padres, who jumped on reliever Ray Washburn for three runs in the third inning to defeat the Reds, 3-1, McGlothlin was hit on the right knee by a line drive.

Clay Kirby, who was the Padres' winner with the aid of Ron Willis, led off the third with a single and scored on singles by Steve Huntz and Cito Gaston. When Pete Rose missed connections with Gaston's hit in right field, Huntz also crossed the plate. Ollie Brown then singled to drive in the Padres' third run. [The Sporting News]
