A baserunning blunder deprived Dalton Jones of credit for a grand-slam homer, forcing him to settle for a three-run single, in the Tigers' 7-3 victory over the Red Sox. Denny McLain, who started for the Tigers, gave up the Red Sox runs including a homer by Dick Schofield, before being removed for a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning when the Tigers tied the score at 3-3.

In the seventh, a single by Elliott Maddox and passes to Norm Cash and Don Wert loaded the bases. Jones batted for Jim Price and smashed a pitch by Vicente Romo into the upper deck in right field, but passed Wert on the paths between first and second bases and was called out. [The Sporting News]
