The Padres, who failed to hold 9-1 lead after knocking out Wayne Simpson, scored in the 10th inning on a sacrifice fly by Steve Huntz and defeated the Reds, 10-9. The Padres' attack on the Reds' prize rookie included back-to-back homers by Dave Roberts and Dave Campbell in the second. Simpson was lifted in the third.

The Reds began their comeback with a two-run homer by Johnny Bench in the fourth. Bench homered again with a man on base in the eighth to ignite a six-sun rally by the Reds. A walk and singles by Tommy Helms and Jimmy Stewart accounted for the third run of the inning and three more followed on a pinch-homer by Bernie Carbo.
