. . . where the 1970s live forever!

A freak homer by Pat Corrales on a rare fielding blunder by Hank Aaron enabled the Reds to win the second game of a twi-night doubleheader, 3-1, after the Braves had slugged their way to an 11-9 victory in the first game. Orlando Cepeda batted in four runs with two homers, Clete Boyer accounted for three RBIs with a homer and an infield out and Aaron sent in two tallies with a single to lead the Braves' attack in the lidlifter. The Reds had homers by Jim Merritt, Bernie Carbo and Woody Woodward. The blow by Woodward in the eighth inning was the first of his eight-year career in the majors.

In the nightcap, George Stone and Tony Cloninger were locked in a scoreless duel until the ninth inning when Dave Concepcion was safe on a throwing error by Sonny Jackson with two out. Corrales followed with a high fly near the fence in right field. Aaron appeared set for the catch, but the ball popped out of his glove, bounced off his bare hand and went over the fence for a homer. The Reds then added a run when Woodward, batting for Cloninger, walked, Pete Rose singled for his fifth straight hit of the game and Bobby Tolan singled. Jimmie Hall homered off Clay Carroll in the last of the ninth for the Braves' run. [The Sporting News]
