. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Sparked by Al Oliver, who hit a homer, the Pirates erupted for four runs in the ninth inning and beat the Cardinals, 6-2, to snap Bob Gibson's personal 10-game winning streak. Richie Hebner homered for the Pirates in the eighth to break a 1-1 tie, but the Cardinals knotted the count again in their half on a double by Carl Taylor and single by Joe Torre.

After Oliver's homer in the ninth, Willie Stargell singled and Manny Sanguillen beat out a bunt. Gene Alley rolled into a double play, erasing Sanguillen. The Cards then passed Bill Mazeroski in order to get at Dave Giusti, pitching in relief of Jim Nelson, but their former teammate surprised them by lashing a two-run triple. [The Sporting News]
