The largest crowd in Pittsburgh's baseball history, 48,846, turned out for the opening of the new Three Rivers Stadium, but the Reds spoiled the occasion by defeating the Pirates, 3-2. Richie Hebner had the honor of scoring the first run, hitting a single in the first inning and coming around on a wild pitch and a double by Al Oliver. However, Gary Nolan walked in the fifth and Tony Perez homered to put the Reds ahead. Willie Stargell tied the score with a circuit clout in the sixth and won a $1,000 reward offered by a fan for the first Pirates' homer in the new park. Perez singled in the ninth, Johnny Bench walked and Lee May followed with a single to drive in the Reds' winning run. [The Sporting News] |
