. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The largest crowd in Pittsburgh's baseball history, 48,846, turned out for the opening of the new Three Rivers Stadium, but the Reds spoiled the occasion by defeating the Pirates, 3-2. Richie Hebner had the honor of scoring the first run, hitting a single in the first inning and coming around on a wild pitch and a double by Al Oliver.

However, Gary Nolan walked in the fifth and Tony Perez homered to put the Reds ahead. Willie Stargell tied the score with a circuit clout in the sixth and won a $1,000 reward offered by a fan for the first Pirates' homer in the new park. Perez singled in the ninth, Johnny Bench walked and Lee May followed with a single to drive in the Reds' winning run. [The Sporting News]
